Cleansing & Detox with Alan Barrier | Episode 29
This week on the Health Made Simple show, we have a brilliant guest joining us, Alan Barrier. Tonight, we are going to be answering your questions about cleansing and detoxing.
Alan is a graduate of the University of Florida in the field of business. During his first five years out of college, Alan found himself weighing over 260 pounds. This left him feeling out of balance emotionally and spiritually. In an attempt to find an answer to his health issue, he discovered Standard Process. For the last 12 years, he has represented Standard Process in a sister company called MediHerb. His journey includes losing 100 pounds, not needing prescribed medication, and slowing the aging process down. His motto is to learn to work harder on yourself than you do on excuses.
Alan has taught me a tremendous amount of tools that I now use to help my patients, family, and friends. Alan is a walking scientific encyclopedia. While Alan is not a doctor, he most likely has a deeper understanding of the human body anatomy, physiology, and nutrition than many of my doctor colleagues.

What are some of the mistakes people make when they want to cleanse?
Most cleansing programs are aggressive on the body. This can produce a Herxheimer response, which causes people to get sick, because they are releasing toxins to a body that is not ready to deal with those toxins. Some programs focus on the colon and the activity of going to the bathroom as a representation of detox. These programs usually fail because they do not support your skin, immune system, lymphatics, or blood circulatory system. Even doing our program can be challenging to follow through. We don’t realize how much our emotions are wrapped up in our eating habits. So when we change our eating behavior, we may cause ourselves to have a visceral emotional response. If I could offer one piece of advice, I would say don’t quit. Pick it up the next day and finish the program because it is not about being perfect. With time, your emotional control over food gets stronger.
This is a very old herb that goes back to 2000 bc. Gymnema is an ayurvedic herb, that when the leaves are chewed, the ability to taste sweet is neutralized. It has been shown to reverse type 2 diabetes within 18 to 24 months without changing someone’s diet. When you take Gymnema, it blocks the taste receptors of sugar, which slows down the brain’s desire to make insulin, and rushes that sugar into the bloodstream. Gymnema also changes the neuronal pathway of the brain and its desire for sugar.
The beautiful thing about this formula is that it has the synergy of whole foods. Nature has a complex structure, and your body has the same. There is a spontaneous need for order within the body and within the cells. Whenever you receive nutrients from whole foods, you bring information from nature into your body. We are always interacting with the environment, and we just don’t realize how important our food is. When we consume sugar, we downregulate the gut-brain connection. I recommend A-F Betafood, because it includes HCl to aid the stomach, arginx for kidney support, and photomorphogenic for the pituitary gland and the pancreas. Six organs benefit from this one product.
Is our cleanse safe for people with medical conditions such as epilepsy that is controlled by an anti-seizure medication?
You want to make sure that your prescribing physician is aware. In the USA, when you take herbal medication, it’s always going to have a warning label that says not to take it with medications unless you’re otherwise informed of its safety by your practitioner. Remind yourself that this is a whole foods diet. I like to tell people that you are not supposed to starve yourself. So for the patient asking, you’re not doing anything more than eating whole foods. Ketogenic diets actually have great benefits in controlling the effects of epilepsy.
Do you need a food processor or blender to join the cleanse?
Yes, get yourself a blender. You don’t have to buy a special one, but you will need a blender. We usually make a couple of shakes a day.
Do I need to buy organic to do the cleanse?
Ideally, we always move in the direction of organic if it is available to you. To get well, you have to clean the cell.
Why do we include smoothies?
It’s to make things easy. A lot of people don’t know how to eat more vegetables or how to cook healthy meals. Smoothies are an efficient and easy way to get a lot of nutrients.
Can you eat meat on the cleanse?
For the first ten days, everything is vegetarian. We do this as a time out for our digestive system since red meats are the hardest for the human body to break down. However, on day eleven, we bring back chicken, eggs, and fish. When you take a break from eating meat it is therapeutic.
SP Cleanse pills have spanish black radish that supports detoxification. Spanish black radish helps to remove damage that has been caused by acetaminophen and Tylenol to the kidneys. SP Cleanse pills also contain burdock root which is a blood cleanser. Essentially, burdock root identifies toxic compounds and helps the body to remove them from the lymphatic system. This has a secondary benefit of clearing your skin. Fenugreek is also in the pills and is a unique compound that helps to support the mucous membranes in the body. Fenugreek helps to break up mucus in the lungs in the digestive tract. It also helps make new healthy mucus. Lastly, the Colisandoroot has positive benefits for hemorrhoids and varicose veins. It tightens the vascular system and helps deliver oxygen and nutrients.
SP complete is a powder that you mix with your shakes. It contains protein, magnesium, and calcium. Magnesium is excellent for relaxing and soothing the muscle. This can actually relax the stomach and allows the gas that builds up in the stomach to release out. Calcium acts as a nerve regulating factor that plays a role in someone’s quality of sleep. The grape seed extract is good for microcirculation. It helps the vascular system cleanse itself so nutrients can be delivered to the brain. Alfalfa is a unique plant that provides a broad spectrum of trace minerals, vitamin b, and vitamin c. It also helps to bind up unhealthy estrogens and hormones, so that they can be removed by the liver.
