All About Toxins | Episode 131

How safe is the world we live in today?

As our lives gear more and more towards convenience, unfortunately, harmful chemicals and toxins become increasingly unavoidable in our daily lives. While we may believe that companies and governments have processes in place to prevent us from getting sick, they are nowhere near foolproof.

GRAS is a common food label we often see on grocery shelves that stands for Generally Regarded as Safe. If you see this label, it means the FDA has approved this certification, but it has not yet actually been tested. Over time, this means that unknown chemical compounds that make their way into our foods are negatively affecting us in ways we don’t even know yet.

This week on the Health Made Simple Show, we discuss the current state of affairs regarding the dangerous toxin exposure we encounter every single day.

Watch the live show below:

There’s HOW many chemicals in my home?!

There are 9000 known chemicals that are integrated into our everyday lives, and are extremely difficult to avoid. The worst include:

  • Makeup and cosmetic products.
  • Water and fire retardant clothing/ products (outdoor gear, mattresses, etc).
  • Stain repellents
  • Electronic equipment

Chances are, you have all 4 in your home right now. And if not, you encounter them regularly elsewhere. In a Chick-fil-a sandwich, for example, the tin foil packaging alone contains these harmful chemicals as well as pop bottles, straws, and processed seed oils (found in all fast foods). Even “good” grocery stores like Whole Foods that have made efforts to eliminate foods containing toxins but not entirely.

The top 4 toxins to be aware of are:

  • Chlorine (pools, unfiltered drinking water)
  • Bromide (flame retardants)
  • Fluoride
  • Iodine

The harmful effects of these toxins also appear in ways you wouldn’t expect. Fatty liver disease for example,  is often associated with excessive alcohol consumption but that is no longer the case. Anyone who is exposed to higher levels of toxins are at risk of fatty liver disease, as they are accumulating toxins faster than what the liver is able to eliminate.

Toxins also prevent your body from methylating energizing nutrients properly. This means your body’s energy stores are depleted. When your body feels like it needs more energy, you start to crave sugar and carbohydrates. This causes a vicious dietary cycle that becomes very hard to break.

It is scary (and disheartening) to understand how difficult it really is to avoid toxins, especially when they sneak in so discreetly. It is also difficult to communicate the urgency to companies responsible because exposure normally does not acutely harm us. But over time, chronic exposure can cause the development of cancers, autoimmune diseases, and countless dysfunctions.

Today it is nearly impossible to avoid toxins altogether. There are two common places toxins are most rampant:

  • Hair salon: Hair coloring and other styling products expose your body to many harmful chemicals (especially if you work in one!).
  • Golf course: There’s a reason you don’t see many birds landing on the golf course. To keep the green as pristine as possible, golf courses use many harmful pesticides and fertilizers to maintain the aesthetic.

Not willing to sacrifice your hairstyle or golf game? Counteract with Milk Thistle to help your body detox before and after planned exposures.

How else can we get toxins out of the body?

  • Practice deep, nose breathing. Your nose is your body’s best natural defense
  • Urinating often. You should be well hydrated, causing you to frequently have to use the bathroom throughout the day. When it isn’t being eliminated regularly, your body is forced to reabsorb the toxins.
  • Regular bowel movements. Similarly to the benefits of urinating, you should aim to have at least one, satisfying bowel movement per day.
  • Sweating. Exercise, sauna, spending time outside are all examples of ways to get your body sweating and getting rid of toxins. As we frequently are taking in toxins, we need to frequently sweat as well.
  • Eat organic foods and drink filtered water to avoid pesticide and other farming chemicals.
  • Avoid drinking water out of plastic water bottles, especially if it has been sitting in sunlight and/ or heat.

Need proof? Dr. Bart also shares two clinical insights he’s seen just this week. Tune in to hear about:

  • How emotional toxicity was causing one patient’s weight gain, hair loss, and muscle pain (and how she fixed it!).
  • The secret to building the body you want without having to hit the gym 7 days a week.

Because of how often we are exposed to these thousands of harmful toxins, it’s more important than ever to regularly participate in a full body cleanse. This will give your detoxification organs a chance to catch up, and take a breather from the hard work they have to do on a daily basis.

Need some help with a kickstart? Join us for our January 2023 detox cleanse, and start your year off toxin-free.
