All Things Auto-Immune! | Episode 136
Approaching Autoimmune Disease Naturally
The number of autoimmune conditions being diagnosed today are beginning to outnumber the number of heart disease and other previously common disorders prevalent in our society.
Is developing an autoimmune preventable? Is there anything you can do about it? Is it permanent?
This week on the Health Made Simple Show, we are breaking down the commonly misunderstood elements of autoimmune disorders, and how to approach healing them naturally.
Watch the live show below:
What Is an Autoimmune Response?
When your body begins to attack itself (or your antibodies are misfiring) it results in an autoimmune disorder. Almost 100 million people are currently suffering from autoimmune disorders (soon to exceed the number of people diagnosed with cardiovascular disease – historically America’s #1 health condition).
While an autoimmune diagnosis can feel like it appears suddenly, these disorders typically move in phases. Beginning silently, they can take years (or even decades) to develop enough to recognize and diagnose.
The root cause of the majority of these problems is the presence of chronic or acute inflammation in the body. When seeking treatment through the traditional medical system, the solution is typically to use pharmaceuticals (commonly steroids) to suppress the symptoms of this inflammation. However, this method will never address the root cause of the autoimmune response, and the longer someone has an untreated autoimmune condition, the more likely it is that they will develop additional autoimmune disorders over time.
There are two main common causes of developing autoimmune disorders:
- Consuming pro-inflammatory foods.
- Infections (tick or insect bites, gut health, toxin exposure, chronic stress, untreated hormonal imbalance)
If you suspect that you are struggling with an autoimmune disorder, it is important to address these two root issues first.
Starting Your Healing Journey
So where do you begin? First, partner with a functional medicine doctor to run a comprehensive testing panel to identify key antibody markers. This will increase your ability to identify the autoimmune disorder early, when it is still in the “silent” phase.
Then, aim to remove ALL inflammatory foods from your diet to support gut health (sugar, gluten, refined carbs, trans fats, and any known allergins to your body). Substitute them with anti-inflammatory foods instead (fresh fruits and vegetables, cruciferous vegetables, good fats, etc).
Then take stock of your current lifestyle. Are you getting enough sleep? Consume enough healing nutrients? Exercise regularly? Consume too much alcohol? Identify destructive patterns in your life, and aim to begin eliminating them.
Supportive Supplements
If you suspect you have leaky gut syndrome, consider supplementing with turmeric and omega 3’s, and adaptogenic, Vitamin D, immune modulating herbs such as echinacea, and rehmannia. These gut-health promoting herbs and vitamins will support your body in reducing inflammation.
If you heal your leaky gut syndrome but are still experiencing autoimmune symptoms, you’ll need to dive a little deeper, and perform more comprehensive testing to identify the root cause of your dysfunction. Alternative therapies such as exosomes therapy and ozone therapy can work wonders if your body needs to reverse years (or even decades) of damage caused by inflammation.
Clinical Insights:
