Are You a Witness? | Episode 132
Is your mind working for you or against you?
There is one common factor that differentiates those who experience true, successful healing, and that is their mindset.
The words they think and speak to themselves, and prioritizing how to understand how to make the body feel good is a pinnacle element to any healing journey, no matter what the problem is.
Watch the live show below:
This week on the Health Made Simple Show, Dr. Bart shares tons of unique examples of how a successful mindset shift can make a world of difference in your healing journey.
This week we discover:
- The 64-year-old new female patient started seeing life-changing results after only one week.
- How the 57-year-old patient who was suffering from debilitating shoulder pain finally got off a painful rollercoaster.
- The terrible piece of advice a cancer survivor, a senior caregiver, and a middle-aged woman all received from their medical doctors (and how they REALLY healed their issues).
Are you under the control of your own body?
The greatest joy you will ever have in your life is achieving something you have worked hard to achieve. While humans typically try to avoid it, pain is actually essential for reflection, and fully appreciate the good times in our lives. Unfortunately, many of us fixate a little too much on our pain – which pushes us in the wrong direction.
The power of the mind over our physical bodies is a phenomenon that we are still trying to fully understand. The psychology of disease, and how our thoughts can affect the healing (or progression) of dysfunction within our bodies is one of the most understudied elements of medicine to date. However, in spite of this, there are countless (real-life!) examples of patients who have drastically improved their health thanks to making mindset shifts.
Becoming a witness to your own words is the most valuable element of any healing journey. Our minds have the ability to shape the reality our bodies believe to be true. Believe it or not, the words we use can actually activate the parasympathetic nervous system (responsible for healing processes within the body). The mindset you have can either contribute or help minimize pain.
Thoughts like “why is this always wrong with me?” “Why does this part of my body never feel good?” alienate yourself from your own body. What would you do if someone said to you the same things you’re saying to yourself? Chances are, you’d start feeling pretty depressed FAST. By only focusing your attention on the worst case scenario, you are not letting your mind support you body’s healing. Never forget that your body loves you, and is on your team. It wants to feel and look good, and pain or discomfort is simply its way of telling you what may be in need of a little more TLC.
Instead ask yourself: “What am I doing when I’m feeling GOOD?” Think about the last time you felt giddy like a little kid. Can you pinpoint what made you feel that way? As humans, our brains are wired to become aware of our health when something is going wrong. When we feel pain, our brains take note of the source so you don’t experience the same problem again. Our second nature is to focus only on sensations that cause us pain. Actively noticing the days your body feels GOOD instead allows you to pinpoint things you’re doing (or not doing) to make continuous improvements.
For example, if you suffer from chronic shoulder pain, chances are you only pay attention during a flare up. While this may help you to identify acute factors that make it feel worse (such as sitting at a desk for a long time, overexercising, consuming gluten), it is not helping you to uncover what you SHOULD be doing instead. When does your shoulder feel the best? Is it after you take your magnesium or fish oil supplements? Or maybe after an acupuncture treatment?
The mind really IS power.
There is no better emotion than the giddy, childlike excitement we’ve all felt at some point in our lives. As adults, this optimistic, positive emotion can be beaten down by the worries and fears of adult life. The good news is that while our minds may forget, the body will remember.
As the New Year approaches, take the time to reflect on all of the strength your body supports you with. Treat yourself with the same care and respect you would to your closest friends and family members, and watch how your body responds.
When your thoughts begin to reflect the positive outcomes you want, you will be amazed at the changes you will see in your body.
