Weight Loss with Dr. Michelle Dunn | Episode 27
Welcome to another episode of the Health Made Simple show. Tonight, we have a very special guest, Dr. Michelle Dunn. She is the founder of Dr. Lady Babe Weight Loss and Wellness and has over 15 years of coaching expertise in nutrition, weight loss, and metabolic resistance. She specializes in helping people with stubborn weight loss and an inability to maintain weight in addition to related chronic illnesses through holistic approaches, diet, exercise, and lifestyle modifications.
Her passion for holistic healthcare was born as a result of her own health struggle, and after decades uncovering the true cause of her weight issues. Dr. Dunn celebrates the concept of becoming a superhuman, because when we are at our healthiest, we exceed our expectations. Dr. Dunn say’s “Coaching people through this process is like watching people come back to life. This is not only a physical journey but an emotional journey.”

Dr. Dunn tells us that when she was about to become a doctor, she had her first weight loss surgery. A decision she made after decades of doing everything to lose weight. When she finally had the surgery, she decided to go that route because nothing else was working for her. The particular one that she had was a Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. By creating a pouch out of the stomach, this reduces the stomach capacity, and therefore, you eat less. However, an unfortunate side effect of this surgery is that you cannot absorb nutrients properly. People go into surgery thinking that this is going to cure them and that the surgery will solve all of their problems. Unfortunately, Dr. Dunn ended up gaining weight and having a host of symptoms after her surgery. She was tired all the time and was having ongoing nausea and dizziness. So ten years after her first weight loss surgery, she got a second one that saved her life. She got a different type of surgery called a full sleeve. She was healing, and everything was good.
Just when Dr. Dunn thought she had made it out of further surprise, her doctor asked her, “Do you consider yourself a lucky person? The good news is that you are cured, but the bad news is that you have cancer. You have an adenocarcinoma growing on the other side of your staple line. This surgery saved your life because when we went there to take all the staples out, we happened to find it.”
When it comes to weight loss and weight loss surgery, Dr. Dunn can speak from both of her experiences that this is not always the answer. There are so many things to look at before going down that road. The reason she created her brand was to educate people about weight loss surgery and how it affects the body.
I want to talk about a young lady that I used to see a couple of times a year. She was in her 20s and was a young professional enjoying life. I didn’t see her for 8-9 months, and when she returned to my office she was a different human being. She gained 120 pounds in 9 months. I remember thinking to myself, what could have happened? She said she was exercising every day, seven days a week. I asked her if the weight gain was a diet issue, and she said she doesn’t eat. She said there was a phase when she was not eating well because she was depressed. She also had an infection from an oral surgery and had to take antibiotics for three months straight.
Dr. Dunn continues to explain that when she was in chiropractic school, she started feeling a little anxious about testing classes and her course load. She started getting depressed and taking antidepressant medications. She was taking a combination of Wellbutrin and Lexapro and she gained 90 pounds in eight months. From a psychological perspective, to feel like you are out of control is terrifying. However, after her first surgery, she started learning about antidepressants and how devastating the side effects can be.
The body is brilliant, and we don’t know it at times. We are not doing it intentionally, but we often interfere. Our fat cells are part of our immune system, and we forget that the job of the fat cell is to collect everything that enters the body that could possibly harm you. Medicine can downregulate these cells and their metabolism.
She started looking at how to support the mitochondria. She did a lot of testing on herself, and was her very first patient. She was looking at things like mold mycotoxins. She ran an oat test and environmental tests. What she found was that she had some serious issues that were interfering not only with her weight but with her health in general. She discovered that she had an ongoing gut infection. This made her think, what if your inability to lose weight has nothing to do with your willpower, motivation, or character? What if you have a legitimate underlying health issue that you need to address and fix first?
Glyphosate and GMOs
Glyphosate is sprayed on lawns to control pests. The GMOs go into the body and inhibit the conversation from cell to cell. This slows down your metabolism and makes you toxic.
Mold
If you discover you have mold, there are binders that we can use that will focus on pulling out the mold, such as Zeolite and Activated Charcoal.
Dr. Dunn explained that for her particular body, what she found to be most effective was a product for the cell core called BioToxin Binder. As you start pulling toxins out from the tissues in your body, you will see an increase on a test before the toxins start to decrease. In other words, things get worse before they get better.
We need to understand that there is no magic potion. She had to be aware of what she was doing regularly, and make sure that she was not only eating the right food, but she was intentionally being very clean about it.
Let’s Talk About Food
The biggest change is to start cooking at home and knowing exactly what is going into your food. My favorite spices that I recommend to my patients and clients are from a brand called Simple Girl. They have no msg, no sugar, no preservatives, and they taste good.
How do you know if you’re eating GMOs? You need to go organic. The challenge here is that companies are not required to put GMOs or non-GMOs on the label. Start shopping organic. If I had to prioritize, I would say that animal meats have to be of the highest quality. Purchase grass-fed, humanely raised animals. To reduce glyphosate, make sure that you are washing your produce.
How to keep the mindset checked?
For me, consistency came from testing and seeing my results changing. What I would also focus on is the big Why? What is the first thing that you’re going to do when you get on the scale and reach your goal? Consistency can be hard, but it helps to go back to your anchor of why you started this to begin with.
Favorite Supplements
The best way to heal your metabolism is through your adrenals. California Poppy is amazing for doing this. I also love Standard Process Drenamin. B vitamins are wonderful for your metabolism as well. It is also important to manage stress and stay hydrated.
