Dry Skin, Fighting Fatigue & More! | Episode 84
I’m going to start with some more clinical insights from the last week, all centered around the theme that your tribe matters. Think about the people you’re spending the most time and energy with, they’re the people who have the most influence over your life. I have a gentleman I’ve been seeing for about three years, he’s a retiree in his sixties. He golfs about three times a week, so a suggestion that I made was that he started walking the course. Most 18-hole courses have you walking between 5 and 7 miles per round. So, he’s been walking 20 to 30 miles a week! On top of that, he’s been golfing with a group of buddies and now they all walk the course together. So, he’s gotten all of his friends to level up with him. Instead of drinking beers on the course while riding in the course, they’re using their favorite hobby to improve their health.
The second one was a bit of a surprise. I was finishing up the day with my team and they asked if I wanted to stick around for Tune-Up Tuesdays. Our team had been getting together (unbeknownst to me!) and they’ve been working out together and getting fit as a tribe. It’s an incredible difference between other places I’ve worked where going out after work certainly wasn’t about working out and being healthy. Being on the right path means we need to be making strategic decisions. Where you are regularly is inevitably going to have an effect on your life. We need to be taking regular gut checks on who we’re allowing to influence us.
The final clinical insight isn’t fun like the others I shared. I’ve known this lady for years, she’s also a retiree in her 60s and she’s been a healthcare advocate as long as I’ve known her. She had a dental procedure done and she was given some preventative antibiotics, something she never takes. After that, for 9 weeks straight, she’s been having serious diarrhea. She completely wiped out her microbiomes, something she’d been building for a long time. Anytime you’re told to take something, it’s important to take a step back and think through all of the consequences. If we’re choosing to put something in our body, we need to make sure it’s a “Must”, not just a passive decision.
Now, let’s move on to some questions…
1. Any new thoughts on the Omicron variant?
We know there’s going to be lots of variants on a virus, that’s nothing new. From what we see now, Omicron hasn’t had significant symptoms or increased mortality rates. I think it’s frankly, par for the course. The constant doom and gloom from media outlets will continue, but the reality is that we’re going to keep seeing variants, and we’re not seeing all that much new. The most important thing is still making sure you have a strategy and making sure you’re on the right path. You will likely be exposed and you may likely test positive. If you have a plan, you don’t need to live in fear. Vitamin D is essential and now that the seasons are changing, you need to take even more than you were in the spring and summer. If you’ve had Covid, the New Year’s Cleanse will help you clear out your system of whatever’s remaining. And if you’re wondering how to just get stronger overall and get out of the cycle of fear, you need to remember your strategy and remember how high the survival rate is. Lastly, we just have to get tougher. We don’t need to be afraid of sicknesses, we don’t need to be foolish either, but we need to understand the reality of what’s going on.
2. Can I get Covid again if I had it in October?
I would say no. I have known people who have tested double, but I haven’t known people who have gotten sick twice. If you had it recently, you should be at no risk because you have natural antibodies.
3. I took the Regeneron antibodies, how long does it take for the body to take them on?
They act in the moment to inhibit the virus from loading up and spreading.
4. On the New Year’s Cleanse, can I still drink my Matcha Green Tea?
Sure, ideally you would use an organic source, but that’s definitely good for you and I’m all for it.
Speaking of, you can still register by clicking the link above or contacting my office at 850.231.9288 or info@balance30a.com.
5. I’m super excited about starting the cleanse and getting back on track. I’m running a 50k trail run on January 16th. I want to do both, but I worry about the miles and staying adequately hydrated. Any advice?
Since this is a whole food cleanse, we won’t be going into any caloric deficiency. The cleanse is hardest for people with carb and sugar addictions, so if that’s you, you’re going to have a very difficult phase, probably around day 3 or 4. Most people are not going to have any issues with energy, outside of those people. Since you’ll be past day 10, you should be in great shape. The first few days, for anyone who is into exercise, be mindful. If you need more rest or to take it a little easier, just be aware of that. During the cleanse, I would be taking additional Cataplex B. The herbs I would suggest are Rhodiola Ginseng and Tribulus.
You’ll drink water through the whole thing. I’ll drink a cup of black coffee in the morning, which is totally fine. It’s 1-2 smoothies and a meal. For the meal, I usually lean towards a soup, especially this time of year, or a big salad. Your smoothies are going to be like small meals, which we have recipes for. For the locals, Prema Cafe is going to have it all dialed in. One of the best things every year is that I discover new foods that I love.
7. Why is my skin so dry and what can I do about it?
There could be a lot of reasons, including the changing seasons. When people have dry skin, they put on oil, so dry skin is often a deficiency of essential fatty oils. As they get depleted, your skin dries up. One of the telltale signs is dry feet and cracked heels. Because we’re putting our weight on them all day long, they will show the depletion first. Dry skin isn’t typically fixed by putting something on, but when you do, I use almond oil. One of the ways we get good oils and fats into our skin is through our gallbladder. If you’ve had it out, you may need to employ different strategies. There could also be a Vitamin B3 deficiency. I’m not a huge fan of taking a lot of niacin, I prefer Cataplex B. You can also use Linum B6, which is flaxseed oil, something I only want in a capsule. We can do an easy at-home test for your Omega 3s, you’re looking for a score of 7.0 or above, which reduces your all-cause mortality. You can get that test by contacting my office at 850.231.9288 or info@balance30a.com.
8. What are your thoughts on vitamin IV therapy?
In acute cases, it is valuable, but they are synthetics. I’ve done it when I was very unwell and needed a complete system flush. You’re spending a lot of money on a temporary result.
9. What should I do or not do if I fatigue and tire easily?
Are you sleeping? Let’s not overlook the obvious, here. After that, look at where your energy is going. Is what you’re doing sucking the life out of you? Are you losing your passion or drive? Are you watching the news all the time and filling your mind with fear? Are you in a relationship that’s draining you? We need to take those gut checks and really identify where the energy is going. There’s always another way, even if you think you’re stuck. If it’s sucking the life out of you, let it go. In addition, you can run tests for Epstein-Barr and insulin resistance. Those would both cause you to lose energy quickly.
And last but not least, this week’s action to become superhuman is…
Get On The Right Path
In order to do that, you have to know where you want to go! Wherever you want to be, get on the path in that direction.
Supplement recommendations:
- For everyone who’s into fitness on the cleanse, I recommended loading up on Cataplex B.
- For dry skin, I also recommended Cataplex B and Linum B6. You can also get a test for your Omega 3s by contacting my office at 850.231.9288 or info@balance30a.com.
