Earth Day – the Good, the Bad and the Ugly | Episode 149
Earth Day
April 22 is Earth Day, so this week’s episode is all about our beautiful planet!
These days, the status of our climate and the health of the earth can get a bit depressing. This week, we’re discussing the harsh truth behind our planet’s current reality, and how to shift our conscious awareness of how our actions impact our environment.
Climate change is one of the most politicized issues we face today.
But what is the REAL problem we are facing? Who is responsible? What can the average person do to reduce pollution and make positive change? How is our health affected by these problems?
Watch the live show below:
Plastics & Landfills
Did you know there is a plastic island in the Pacific ocean the size of Texas? This is unfortunately just ONE example of how much garbage is currently polluting our oceans. The average American uses 156 plastic water bottles per YEAR. With over 330 million people, that becomes insurmountable pretty fast. That’s not even mentioning plastic shopping bags, take out containers, etc that our society disposes of on a daily basis.
Think about your own daily habits. How many one-time use products do you consume and throw away? One of the best ways you can make an individual difference is re-using what you have instead of consuming single-use items.
Water
With so much of our planet consisting of water, how is it possible we could have a water shortage? This is the unfortunate consequence of allowing chemicals, pollution, and other foreign substances into our water supply. The more water we use, the more that needs to be treated to ensure safe consumption. Additionally, monoculture agriculture practices (which have taken over as a top North American farming method) is also filling local water supplies with chemicals like fluoride and bromide which negatively affect our hormone health and are almost impossible to fully filter out.
How can you help contribute to preventing a water shortage? Start with simply taking shorter showers. Consider getting in when the water is still warming up instead of wasting a minute’s worth of water.
Elevate Your Consciousness
Looking for ways to show planet Earth a bit more love, but don’t know where to start? Here are our top tips for becoming more conscious about how your actions are affecting our environment:
- If you cut it, you plant it. Make a conscious effort to replace what you use, and replant new vegetation to account for what you consume.
- Avoid coming in contact with any products treated with flame retardants. These chemicals leach into our skin and can cause long-term toxicity.
- ⅓ of all food produced for human consumption is wasted and sits in landfills producing methane gas (another contributing factor to climate change). Compost your food waste instead of throwing it away.
- Seek local businesses that are conscious about the way they are disposing of their waste.
- Buy local, organic food that is made of chemical and pesticide free.
