Foods We Think Are “Healthy” But Aren’t | Episode 45
Tonight on the Health Made Simple show, we dive into “health” foods that actually aren’t that healthy. In this episode, I list common brands, and I don’t mean to pick on these companies. I know they’re well-intended and doing the best they can! I do this solely for information purposes.
We go over the top three questions you should ask about your food, why you never should eat glyphosate, and how to read food labels.
We also cover vegetable oils & their effect on the body, “natural” flavors, and Chick-Fil-A.
Watch the live show below:
Beyond Burger & Impossible Burger
Both of these foods are getting a lot of good press as environmentally sustainable and healthy alternatives to a hamburger.
The Impossible Burger and the Beyond Burger are almost identical, but they use a little bit of a different protein source.
The first question that you should ask about every food is is it organic?
If it is not organic, you are putting chemicals into your body. Non-organic food downregulates your systems, and your body has to work harder to get the toxins out. As awesome humans who are trying to level up their health, you have to start with this question as your foundation.
Both the Impossible Burger and the Beyond Burger are not organic.
The second question you should be asking is is it a GMO product?
Maybe you can’t get organic, but you have to make sure you’re getting a non-GMO product.
These hamburger replacements also fail this test. They’re heavy in glyphosate.
Glyphosate is a herbicide found in products we use to kill weeds on our lawns like Roundup. These burgers are loaded with glyphosate, which is then going directly into our bodies.
GMO foods have a high concentration of pesticides and herbicides and come with chemicals in them so they can survive in their environment better. You should also ask if it’s a whole food source.
On the label for the impossible burger, soy protein concentrate is the second ingredient.
Soy is considered an anti-nutrient. It has an acid in it that binds to nutrients and takes them away. Soy also has an estrogenic effect, which means it raises the bad kind of estrogen and leads to things like breast cancer. Avoid all soy products, especially if they’re GMO.
Soy, corn, and potato are the top GMO products in our country – so be on the lookout for those products on a label.
Chick-fil-A
If you’re going to do fast food, many people think that Chick-fil-A is a healthier option.
In our country, we have been conditioned to think we need meat with every meal, and that’s simply not the truth. That condition certainly comes into play when choosing a fast food option like Chick-fil-a. We think that because it’s not a burger and we chose an alternative, then it’s a good thing.
Here’s my secret! I Love Chick-fil-A’s chicken sandwich. It tastes amazing, but there’s a reason for it.
Chick-fil-A has some of the best and highest-paid scientists that know exactly how our taste buds work. I haven’t eaten it in years though because of what’s inside it.
As we deconstruct the label for the chicken sandwich, one of the first ingredients in the chicken is monosodium glutamate (MSG). MSG is addictive to humans.
Also in the chicken itself is sugar. In one sandwich there are fifty-five ingredients, including Yellow 5 in the pickles which is a known brain carcinogen.
Convenience kills vitality. When it comes to building health, we have to participate in making good decisions and making food.
What Oils Should We Avoid?
Vegetable oil is not a healthy option because it’s processed. Canola oil, soybean oil, and grape seed oil also fall into this processed, vegetable oil category.
Almost all of these oils are GMO products. Once these oils get into our bodies, it is very hard to get rid of them.
You can develop fatty liver from canola oil, even if you’re extremely healthy. Canola oil is hard to burn off because it gets stuck in the visceral fat.
With olive oil, make sure it’s an organic source. If it’s cold-pressed, it would be great as well.
Check your salad dressing for these bad oils. Salad dressing is a sneaky place where bad oils, sugar, and MSG show up.
Juices
Cold-pressed juice has become the name of the game. The juice is less oxidized and has less sugar transferred.
Now, manufacturers are doing high-pressure processing (HPP) to juices. Check the bottle to see if it’s HPP. HPP neutralizes enzymes, making them unavailable. Enzymes are why we drink juices in the first place. Many manufacturers utilize HPP because it gives juices a longer shelf life, but it takes out the nutrients.
Proteins
Whey protein comes from a cow’s milk. It is a dairy product. There are two ways you can get whey. Whey protein concentrate or whey protein isolate.
We want to make sure our whey protein is from concentrate, not an isolate, and that it is organic.
Because whey is a dairy product, it comes with fat, protein, and a carbohydrate naturally. The isolate is processed one extra level, where manufacturers pull the fat and carbohydrate out. This is what we considered denatured. Because it’s denatured, isolate whey protein is more difficult to digest. You can almost always find isolate whey proteins in protein bars.
Whey protein isn’t for everyone though. Other great proteins are pea proteins, hemp proteins, and brown rice proteins.
Diet Soda
Almost all sodas are entirely chemicals, and so they don’t pass our organic test. The chemicals in drinks such as Diet Coke are extremely addictive.
Questions from the audience:
What about artificial sweeteners like stevia?
For the most part, scrap all the artificial sweeteners. In my clinic, I try to move people away from natural sweeteners like stevia and dates.
If you’re going to use stevia, it needs to be organic and whole leaf (not processed). There is a lot of stevia on the market that’s highly processed. I lean away from sweeteners because people become reliant on sweeteners and won’t enjoy anything without them. One of the ways to eat less sweet is to eat more bitters like arugula, ginger, and kale.
Is black rice a good option?
Yes, it is a good option. So number one, is it organic? If you get organic black rice, it’s awesome.
What is one action that we can take today after this episode to move us toward becoming superhuman?
To get well, you have to clean the cell. However, you can get cleaner and cleaner cells, continue to do that.
