Healing Leaky Gut | Episode 117
In this episode, we explore what leaky gut is, how it can affect our health, and practical steps we can take to heal our gut and improve our overall well-being.
Watch the live show below:
To begin, let’s define what we mean by leaky gut. Leaky gut, also known as intestinal permeability, is a condition in which the lining of the small intestine becomes damaged, allowing toxins, bacteria, and undigested food particles to pass through the intestinal wall and enter the bloodstream. This can trigger an immune response and inflammation, leading to a range of health issues, including digestive disorders, autoimmune diseases, and even mental health conditions.
So, how can leaky gut affect our health? When toxins and other harmful substances leak into the bloodstream, they can trigger an immune response, leading to inflammation in the gut and throughout the body. This inflammation can contribute to a range of health issues, including chronic fatigue, joint pain, skin problems, and even depression and anxiety.
Now that we understand the impact of leaky gut on our health, what are some practical steps we can take to heal our gut and support our overall wellbeing?
First, we can focus on removing foods and other substances that can contribute to gut damage and inflammation. This includes processed foods, refined sugar, alcohol, and certain medications, such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
Second, we can focus on consuming nutrient-dense, whole foods that support gut healing and reduce inflammation. This includes foods rich in fiber, vitamins, and minerals, such as leafy greens, fruits, vegetables, and lean protein.
Third, we can consider incorporating gut-healing supplements, such as probiotics, digestive enzymes, and glutamine, into our diet. These supplements can help to restore and maintain a healthy balance of gut bacteria and support the repair of the intestinal lining.
Fourth, we can manage stress, which can contribute to gut inflammation and further damage the intestinal lining. This can include practicing relaxation techniques, such as meditation or yoga, and getting enough sleep.
We can work with a healthcare professional, such as a registered dietitian or functional medicine practitioner, to develop a personalized plan for healing leaky gut based on our individual needs and health history.
Healing leaky gut is a crucial aspect of supporting overall health and wellbeing. By removing inflammatory foods and substances, consuming nutrient-dense whole foods, incorporating gut-healing supplements, managing stress, and working with a healthcare professional, we can support the repair and maintenance of the gut lining and improve our overall health.
