How Does Your Health Measure Up? | Episode 133

by | Dec 23, 2022 | The Health Made Simple Show

As 2022 comes to a close, it’s natural to start to reflect upon the year that has passed.

When you look at your current health situation, are you evaluating your progress? How close are you to becoming the best version of yourself?

Unfortunately, “winging it” doesn’t work very well when you’re trying to make substantial changes. To truly make a difference in your healing journey, you need to measure the right metrics to set yourself up for success.

This week on the Health Made Simple Show, Dr. Bart breaks down the top 3 elements of your health that cannot be ignored in 2023.

Watch the live show below:

How are you moving?

If you aren’t moving properly, the rest of your body will quickly follow. These factors have the greatest impact on how well your body moves:

Sleep

Sleep is crucial for your body to rest, heal, and rejuvenate. Monitoring your sleep will help you understand your current state of affairs. 7-8 hours per night is ideal for optimal health.

Consider the amounts of REM and deep sleep you’re getting every night. Deep sleep is when your body and brain is able to detoxify, and is essential for proper rest. Sadly, many people can sleep for 8 hours per night and still not get any deep sleep, as it inhibited by many factors including alcohol and medications.

You can use many different technologies available to measure the quality of the sleep you are getting (such as the Oura Ring for example). Aim for at least 60-90 minutes of deep sleep minimum every night.

Range of motion

Mobility is essential to being able to move optimally. When looking to improve your mobility, focus on shoulder and back mobility specifically. Can you pull a shirt off without tension? If not, you need to do some serious stretching.

Balasana (aka the yoga squat) is a great indicator of full-body mobility. If you can complete the movement with your heels on the ground, and your hamstrings resting on your calves, your mobility is in a good place.

Strength

Strong muscles are great indicators of a healthy body. Pullups, pushups, deadhangs (60-120 seconds is ideal) and grip strength are the top movements to focus on for full body strength.

What levels of strength should you be aiming for?

For pushups, men should aim to be able to complete 27 straight pushups, (no knees!), and women should be able to do a minimum of 11. For pullups, men should aim for 8 in a row, women 3. For grip strength,  men should be able to hold 100 lbs, and women 50-60. Finally, aim to successfully be able to dead hang for 60-120 seconds.  While grip strength and dead hangs may be “boring” movements to some, there is a direct correlation between lack of hand grip strength and likelihood of falling and injuring oneself.

What are you eating?

How aware are you about what you’re putting into your body? Are you eating the right types of food? Why do you eat the things you do? How much do you eat? By asking yourself these questions regularly, you can approach eating more mindfully.

What you put into your body dictates your entire healing journey, so it should always remain a top priority!

How are you thinking?

How much love do you give your body? Are you a good listener? You become what you think, so if you find that your mind is full of self-critical thoughts, you’re not doing yourself any favors.

Evaluate your self-care rituals. Your habits, beliefs, and routine behaviors should be serving you and your health, otherwise they don’t belong in 2023. Never underestimate the impact even a small change can have on your life. Following a supplement routine, exercising regularly, and positive affirmations should replace a sugary diet, and self-deprecating thoughts.
