The Health Made Simple Show Welcomes NFL Player Colin Thompson!

When you are starting out on a new health journey, it can almost feel like a full-time job. Meal planning, carving time out to exercise, and getting enough sleep can be a lot to handle.

You likely think to yourself – “I wish I was getting paid to do this” when you just can’t summon the motivation to stay on track.

This week on the Health Made Simple Show we welcome special guest Colin Thompson. NFL player, entrepreneur, and nutrition enthusiast, Colin is here to discuss how he takes care of his body and mind as a professional athlete.

Watch the live show below:

What Does a Professional Athlete Do Anyway?

If you decide you want to pursue such a competitive line of work, it’s imperative that you set a strong foundation. You need your closest inner circle and a dedicated coach in your corner. Moments of weakness where you feel like giving up WILL come along, and you need someone who can help pick you up and keep you going in the right direction (even when you want to give up).

Facing failure is inevitable in the world of professional sports, and overcoming it is one of the biggest mindset challenges you can face when pushing your body to the limit.

Next, you need a laser-focused vision of your goals. Vision boards, manifesting, and sharing your goals with others will all help to motivate your brain to keep the eye on the prize.

It’s no different than the average health journey. Making major changes in your life (whether you need to lose 100 lbs or train for the Superbowl) requires serious mental focus. You need to be 110% dedicated to your WHY and HOW to rewire your body and mind.

But what happens when you give 100% and you still fall short? In football, Colin discusses how you can follow your training program to the T, but can still lose the game. Staying the course on your nutrition journey is no different. You can follow your nutrition and exercise protocol to the last detail but still experience short-term setbacks. It’s all about trusting the process.

Part of that process is getting the help of trusted experts. NFL players leverage nutritionists and professional trainers to design their success plans. In fact, I originally met Colin when he came into the clinic for postseason chiropractic care.

The Pro-athlete’s Guide to Recovery:

While following a diligent training regimen is important to a successful season, it is equally as important to take care of your body afterward as well. In the world of a professional athlete, taking care of your physical well-being is the #1 priority.

How does Colin decompress after giving 110% all season long? This is his secret:

  • 1 cold plunge daily
  • Sauna 3x/ week (for a minimum of 10 minutes each).
  • 3-4x/ week of strength training.
  • Massage therapy 1-2x/ week.
  • Chiropractic care 1-2x/ week.

What commonalities have I seen across the top athletes I’ve worked with? While genes or natural makeup contribute to some luck in regards to how “naturally” building strength becomes, it all comes down to the training strategy. The athletes that most diligently follow a training protocol that is best attuned to their body will perform the best, and will find themselves successful during the draft pick.

A Professional Athlete’s Take on Alcohol

How does a professional athlete navigate the temptations of alcohol? How do you celebrate your successes when you’re dedicated to a specific training routine?

The reality is, you have to accept the effect alcohol can have on your body, and how it can roadblock your training progress. Colin doesn’t touch alcohol except on occasion, on the off-season only.

Keep Your Eyes on the Prize

No matter what your physical goals are – whether you want to ensure you have physical strength to enjoy life with your spouse or you’re an aspiring professional athlete, success boils down to one concept: understanding your WHY. Making physical changes within your own body is one of the hardest things you can do in your life, so you need to be mentally present with your goals if you want to see success.

There is no greater feeling than accomplishing a challenging goal you have set for yourself, so don’t let your own mind get in the way of your success.
