How to Detox? | Episode 134

New year, new you!

January 1 is one of the most popular times of year to recommit to new goals. This week on the Health Made Simple Show, we’re breaking down the top 3 steps you need to take if you’re considering a detox this New Year.

Watch the live show below:

What is detoxing?

Detoxing is the process of eliminating anything that is inhibiting optimal human (specifically mitochondrion) function. The majority of the toxins that you consume on a regular basis are invisible – but just because you can’t see them, doesn’t mean they are not there (and causing you harm!). To fully detox properly, you need to account for all of the toxins preventing your body from being the healthiest it can possibly be.

Today’s topic is how to detox, and it comes down to 3 main elements:

1. Getting Clean

The first step to beginning a body detox is to identify what toxins you are being exposed to in the first place. Consider the water you drink for example. Fluoride is the main chemical found in tap water today, which alone can negatively affect your thyroid and gut health. Remember, healing requires hydration, so ensure that the water you are drinking is properly filtered and toxin-free.

The foods we eat are typically the #1 source of toxin exposure in our lives. Refined sugar, gluten, pesticides, and other “cleansing” chemicals we find in foods today can wreak serious havoc on the body over time. Eating a completely clean or whole-food diet can be one of the hardest habits to form (but the most worth it). If you’re looking to make some dietary changes, take it one step at a time, until you’ve rebuilt a healthier nutritional foundation. Aim to eventually completely cut sugars, red meat, and gluten out of your diet.

2. The Tools

How much clutter do you have in your life? Extra stuff requires extra energy, and can even disguise new inbound toxins coming into your life. Your physical space around you is an indicator of your internal space. Even if you are able to turn a blind eye to a mess, a disorganized space will silently roadblock your progress over time. Without an environment that promotes a healthier way of life, it will be harder to make permanent changes.

Take a look at the people you choose to surround yourself with. Toxic people who bring us down can sneak into our lives (especially if they are family members, coworkers, or other people you see on a regular basis) and prevent us from becoming the best version of ourselves. On the flip side, when we surround ourselves with people and places that serve us, it encourages the development of healthy habits necessary to live a toxin-free life. Staying away from gossip and negativity goes a long way.

3. The Mindset

You won’t see real progress with any health initiative until you are mentally committed to making change within yourself. Ask yourself, “what got me here?” “What does success look like to me? Identifying your “why” is the first step in aligning your mindset to set yourself up for success.

Remember, it’s almost impossible to be perfect, and that’s okay (especially if you are attempting any sort of detox for the first time)! Don’t let the fear of failure hold you back from trying at all. Remember, trying, failing and restarting 100 times is better than never trying at all.

When making an active effort to detox your body, don’t forget to pay attention to what you are mentally consuming as well. Smart phones, computers, and TV are the top culprits of exposing our minds to media and content that is not serving us. From the people you speak with, podcasts you listen to, ads you’re exposed to, etc, make a conscious effort to only consume information that promotes your detox goals.
