Genetic Testing + Labs | Episode 25

by | Oct 25, 2020 | The Health Made Simple Show

In tonight’s episode of the Health Made Simple Show, we are going to be talking about lab testing. Lab testing is user friendly and easy to understand. Functional lab testing is different from traditional lab testing. The biggest difference between the two is the goal of the patient and what we are looking for. When you go to the doctor to get your lab work and your annual test, the main goal is to rule out diseases. When it comes to functional medicine, the key here is to look at how your body is functioning and use that data to level up your health. The body never lies. You can choose which type of lab test to run based on symptoms or according to the patient’s history.

Adrenal Stress Index

The adrenal glands produce fight or flight hormones. The adrenals produce the stress hormone cortisol, and if you run out of your stress hormones, you’re left naked, unable to defend yourself. As a result, your body can’t recover after a workout, you will experience brain fog, or you may gain weight. The Adrenal Stress Index test indicates if the body is producing cortisol. Clinically, this test lets me know how to treat patients with adrenal fatigue. If you’re not producing cortisol, you must treat your adrenal glands.

Hormones

Hormone panels are connected to cholesterol. All of your hormones: estrone, testosterone, androsterone, come from cholesterol. Before taking any anti cholesterol medication, please consider that cholesterol makes all of your hormones. I recommend eating healthy fats to have balanced hormones. .

Organic Acid Tests

Organic Acid tests are the gold standard for getting a glimpse inside your body. It gives data on yeast, fungus, bacteria, vitamins, and minerals. Organic Acid tests are convenient, as they are a urine test that you can do at home. The only issue with this test, quite frankly, is that it is not user-friendly. Mitochondrial markers in the Organic Acid test indicate our level of health and help determine how long we are going to live. The neurotransmitter marker helps us know how much dopamine and epinephrine we have in our body, which then helps determine our mood. If you don’t have enough dopamine, you will get depressed, and you may turn to sugar or carbohydrate rich food which creates a dopamine rush. Dopamine and serotonin begin in the gut, so if there is something off with the gut, we can understand where a patient’s anxiety and depression is coming from.

Micronutrient test.

There are micro and macronutrients. Macronutrients are carbohydrates, fats, and protein. They are well known because that is how we measure food. Micronutrients are vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, and they are measured in micrograms and milligrams. Sometimes we forget that vitamins and minerals are what gives the cell the tools to carry out other jobs. A micronutrient test is a blood test that takes ten days in the lab to get results. This test also scores your immune system and antioxidant function.

Food Sensitivities

A food sensitivity test is a blood-blocked test that is as simple to complete as a finger prick. However, there is a difference between a food sensitivity and a food allergy. An allergic reaction to a food includes an autoimmune response. The biggest reason we see more and more cases of food sensitivity is because of GMOs. GMOs downregulate cells. The cells can’t absorb the nutrients, so the body has an immune response.

What is the difference between IgG and IgM tests?

IgG and IgM are different types of immune markers to indicate how the immune system is doing.

Aura Ring

The Aura Ring monitors your heart rate variability. Every morning the Aura Ring gives you a readiness score which tells you how ready you are to start the day. It also gives you insight based on how well you slept. Sleeping is one of the most important things for the human body. It is key to understand how we sleep because REM and deep sleep determine how well our brain will function that day.
