LIVE Q&A: Medications | Episode 61
While many people have interest in natural health, most are still taking some prescription medication or over the counter drug. The problem many encounter is that while these pills may solve one health problem, they may cause several others at the same time. The great thing is, you don’t have to stop taking prescription drugs to integrate natural health solutions and supplements to balance out the negative effects these drugs can often have.
As always, knowledge is power and understanding what these medications are blocking and inhibiting is the key to knowing what you can replace and supplement to balance your health and save yourself from side effects that can be worse than the intended effects. Let’s explore some of the most common medications, their side effects and the way you can counterbalance them.
Watch the live show below:
Blood Pressure Medications
Blood pressure medications fall into three main categories:
-Ace Inhibitors: These can also serve to inhibit sodium and zinc in the diet. While most people are quick to avoid sodium, it is an electrolyte and an important part of health. You should absolutely avoid standard white table salt, but adding sea salt to your diet is important to your health. As for zinc, a zinc supplement such a Zinc Chelate, can support digestion, protein synthesis and improve prostate health
-Beta Blockers: Beta blockers are well known for inhibiting melatonin. While I don’t encourage melatonin supplements because it is a hormone, it’s important to understand that you may have to focus extra energy on maintaining a regular sleep schedule and other good sleep habits. The other main thing beta blockers can inhibit is your CoQ10, which is extremely important for your heart health and for protecting cells from free radicals. You can supplement this with Cellular Vitality or by searching for a Thorn CoQ10 supplement.
-Calcium Blockers- While what’s blocked is fairly obvious, the side effects aren’t. Many people on calcium blockers experience great fatigue because their muscles aren’t contracting at the same rate and because their heart is being made weaker. A supplement like Cataplex G can strengthen your heart and other muscles and combat fatigue and weakness.
Steroids
Steroids downregulate your immune system, essentially telling it not to work so hard or function in the way it had been. This can cause deficiencies in Calcium, Potassium, Zinc, Vitamin D, Selenium and inhibit your thyroid production. You may need multiple balances to counteract a steroid if you’re taking a regular dosage long term. A Catalyn Whole Food Multivitamin is a good step because it will replace many of the things you’re deficient in all at once.
Thyroid Medications
Thyroid medications are quickly becoming one of the most prescribed types of medication and they come with their own set of deficiencies to counteract. First, iron, which can cause poor blood health and production. Ferrofood is a great once a day option to restore the iron you may be missing. In addition, calcium deficiency is common with thyroid medications. However, taking a massive calcium pill won’t do the trick as you want your body to absorb the calcium slowly over time. In addition to dietary changes (adding red meat and dark meat poultry in moderation), Calcium Lactate Powder will not only provide calcium, but help your body absorb it.
Cholesterol Medications
While many people take cholesterol medications thinking they’re protecting their hearts, this is one of the few medications that can have the exact reverse effect by inhibiting your CoQ10 and compromising the strength of your heart. While I’m certainly not explicitly recommending going off any medications, it’s important to make sure you understand the negative effects and supplement them with the necessary CoQ10 your body needs.
Birth Control/Estrogen/HRT
One of the biggest dangers with these medications is folic acid deficiency. Folic acid is necessary to produce and maintain new cells and strengthen and maintain your DNA structure. Without these things, your risk for cancers is extremely elevated. In addition, the rest of your B vitamins can be depleted and can cause the fatigue that leads to sugar and carb addiction. A B supplement such Cataplex B can help balance out what you’re losing with these medications and can help protect from those cancers you’re at higher risk for.
Antibiotics
Antibiotics, while they can be helpful, can also inhibit Vitamins B, K and D and strongly upset your gut health and intestinal pH. In order to maintain a healthy intestinal environment, you can counteract with a probiotic such as Zymex, which is made to restore your internal health.
NSAIDs and Over the Counter Pain Medication
NSAIDs, while common in most medicine cabinets, are becoming one of the top leading causes of death because of abuse, misuse and ignorance of their effects. These medicines can break down your gut lining and make it so your body can’t absorb the nutrients, even if you’re getting them. You can counteract this with Vitamin C and other aforementioned supplements, but the most important thing you can do is closely monitor your usage of these medications.
Allergy Medication
While allergy medications can be useful, they can also deplete your Vitamin C and Zinc, both of which can have the same side effects allergy medications are trying to prevent, such as weakened immune system and fatigue.
What is one action that we can take today after this episode to move us toward becoming superhuman?
The most important takeaway from this is to Use Your Knowledge as Power. Many people take prescribed medication blindly, unconcerned with the side effects or deficiencies they may be left with. It’s important to not just educate yourself, but to use that knowledge to counteract these side effects and give yourself a better balanced health.
