Meat, Shingles, Aging, And More! | Episode 98

by | Apr 13, 2022 | The Health Made Simple Show

This week on the Health Made Simple Show, we’re going to kick off with a tale of two different clinical insights. We’re going to talk about two women in their early fifties with completely different outlooks. One of them looked at me this week and said “I hate getting older” and began to run through a laundry list of aches and pains and ailments. The other one I saw is the polar opposite and is absolutely thriving. Her attitude is always looking for what else she can do to level up her health.

Sometimes you can be doing all the right things and still not achieve “perfection”. You may still have pain and bad days and other things that you may not like. Does age compound things? Sure. But you also have the ability to be better about your health more and more every year and compound good habits as well. I’m living proof. I practiced four decades of poor health, but that didn’t doom me to a lifestyle of feebleness. Own your health, good and bad, and if you’re not happy, do something to change it! There’s no specific number that makes you feel “old”. If your doctor ever just dismisses you by telling you you’re just old… FIRE THEM! When you take responsibility for your health, you empower yourself to make changes. Your perception of aging has as much of an effect on your health as the number of years you’ve lived.

Now, we’re going to dive into some more of your questions.

1. Is meat the best go-to when eating out?

Not necessarily, but it could be. When it comes to meat, I’m not necessarily saying let’s eat a ton of meat, I’m saying let’s let it find its appropriate place at our table. If it’s not grass-fed, organic beef, it’s not good for you. I’ve argued that red beef can be as healthy for you as kale, and there’s new research that’s saying exactly that. In addition, grass-fed, organic beef is good for you and sustainable, unlike what’s often coming out of the beef industrial complex. The key isn’t getting rid of beef, it’s getting good beef into your diet. Not to mention, combining bad beef with french fries and a gluten bun is a recipe for disaster.

However, there are times when there really are no good options on a menu, and in those situations, it’s okay to just skip a meal. You wouldn’t put bad fuel in your car just because it was at the closest gas station. You should treat your body the same way. When you stay prepared, you’re better able to handle issues that come. The rule of thumb is to always stay as close to God’s Garden as possible.

2. I know you’re a holistic doctor, yet, of all the pain meds out there, do you have any you recommend?

To start, I want to say that pain sucks and it can make us do some pretty strange things. Pain medications by themselves are generally not good for you. The main pain group in the United States is the opioids, which were pushed by a conglomerate of people scheming to make money, despite the extremely addictive nature. When you have surgeries and broken bones, those are the go-to’s, and you need to be very careful of them.

The other thing to remember is that pain exists for a reason. It’s signaling your brain to tell you that damage has happened. If you need to stop moving your finger, your brain will send pain signals to tell your body to stop doing the thing it needs to stop doing. Our brains and bodies are truly brilliant! Being able to feel some pain is critical in the healing process. It’s the alarm system of our bodies. The alarm only goes off when there’s a problem.

Here’s what I will say. If you have to use one, take it and then go to bed. You’re still not going to get the nutrients you need, but it’s not going to do the damage it could’ve done. There’s one called Saligesic, which is what they mimic aspirin from but doesn’t have the side effects. We also use Nervagesic, which also helps you relax and be able to sleep at night. Things like CBD can also be effective treatments. Of course, they’re not going to be as strong as opioids because they also don’t carry the addictiveness and the horrible side effects.

There are also so many things you can do to address the root causes of pain. Your headache wasn’t caused by a lack of aspirin! For example, with headaches, the brain gets dehydrated and it causes pain. You can take Cod Liver Oil and hydrate yourself and you may find that headache relieved. So many pain issues could be alleviated or even totally solved by just drinking water.

3. My doctor recommended an aspirin a day since Covid, is this a good idea?

For a while, this has been a common recommendation. The truth is, the virus has made people vulnerable to clotting, so it’s recommended to thin the blood. Now we have to ask ourselves… Do we really want thinner blood? You can tell people who take a daily aspirin because they’re having more bruising due to thinner skin. It also can break down the stomach lining and inhibit fundamental nutrients from getting through. It can even create bleeding stomach ulcers over time. If this is what your doctor is suggesting, have a conversation with them. Talk about the reasons and the side effects and make the best decision for your health.

4. My husband was recently diagnosed with shingles, is there anything we can do to help?

Shingles is a virus, similar to chickenpox, and yes, you still can get it even if you’ve had chickenpox. It shows up in skin patterns that follow the nerves. By knowing that, we know that this virus is very connected to the nervous system. Getting adjusted is absolutely a viable treatment, as it calms your nervous system down. When it comes to supplements, there are some specific ones you can use. Viranon is great immune system support, particularly when it comes to fighting viruses. You also need to make sure you’re getting absorbable calcium, we use Calcium Lactate combined with Cataplex F as a facilitator. You also need to watch out for chronic prolonged stress and try to get some better sleep.

5. Is age really a reason we start to feel bad?

It’s not about age, it’s about how we’re aging. We clog our detox pathways, and when we do that, we simultaneously create nutritional deficiencies, rendering us unable to make new cells. From there, your mitochondria start to break down and you begin to experience the effects of what people think of as “aging”. Here’s what you can do. Clean up your detox pathways and restore your nutritional deficiencies. When you add our other biohacks, you’re on your way. If you want to get younger, get cleaner.
