Pain: How To Manage & Tolerate It! | Episode 55

by | Jun 15, 2021 | The Health Made Simple Show

In today’s episode, we will talk about pain as well as pain management and tolerance.

Pain is something very natural for humans to have. If we put our hand too close to the fire and it hurts we pull our hand back, that’s what keeps us safe. Pain is actually what keeps us safe. It is so important in our life. And a lot of people give up function in life just to give up the pain.

The Influence we have

I want to share a situation that happened last week. I got a call to rush to a spot just 10 minutes away from my clinic. There was a guy who couldn’t get out of the passenger seat. He couldn’t move. After a while, he started walking slowly and could leave the seat, but the next day the pain really hit. He came into my clinic and couldn’t even lay on the table. But we talked and had a good conversation, and I was able to get his breathing better regulated.

Then in comes the wife. And immediately, I recognized something is off here. She asked me if I could fix him because he needs to bring their son to a game a 10-hour drive away. He straight away got all tense again. So I started again, asked him a few questions, loosened him up a bit. Keeping him in the present instead of the fight and flight mode. Then she akes if he’s able to go to the beach later. He instantly got his pain back and tensed up. I told him he will have a little vacation after our session. Just laying on the couch watching some TV and getting that rest! She got annoyed.

All the pressure he had on healing made him go back in the progress.

I am sharing this for people to know that how we act and the fear or pressure we put on somebody to heal is massive. Everything we do does impact other people and we can either support or we can become a hindering in the journey that each of us is on.

The Three Pain Personalities

So there are 3 pain personalities (just my clinical observation). And please know that I am not judging anyone at any time. These are just my experience over time.

Typ 1

The best pain is no pain! They try to avoid pain as best as they can. If they do have pain, they want to get rid of it as fast as possible. There most of the time is not a link between the body-mind connection. In this category, they will compromise human function for pain reduction.

Typ 2

This group has the knowledge; they understand that they don’t want to mask their pain with strong medication.

These people say they have a good pain tolerance. And they do UNTIL they have a lot of pain. Then the famous words come into play: But I had to! I had to get the medicine. I had to get the surgery in order to get rid of the pain!

They haven’t yet created the most important thing about the pain, which is patience. They also have that unique way of really creating an interesting story about their pain. They put it out there and keep talking about it. So they continue to use the energy that brought the pain in the first place, and they keep it alive.

When you repeat the story of what happened and how it happened, you are keeping it alive. Remember, you are not your past. You are not your story.

The fear in us of ”what if that is never getting better? Do I have to live with the pain forever?” That fear is worse than the injury.

Typ 3

They are using their pain as fuel. They use their mistakes as opportunities to improve moving forward. There is no identifying with their injuries. Number 3 recognizes, attracting negative energy to their pain makes their pain worse. So they intentionally avoid public attention that comes with pain, trauma, loss—all of those things.

The Mindset

The significant little question here is: What is my body asking me for? There are some understandings like these two: The body never lies. And: The power that made the body is the power that heals the body. If you can just grasp these 2 little things, it gives you this great assurance that whatever it is that you are going through, you will get through this.

One of my team members asked me the other day: But how do you emphasize when they are suffering? You give them certainty. Remind them: This too will pass! You got this!

Acute & Cronic Pain

In an acute phase, the most important thing is the mindset. More important than any drugs, medication, or any herbs.

But for chronic pain, like chronic lower back pain, chronic shoulder pain, the number one thing for pain management is diet!

There are also some herbs that I will recommend here that are absolutely fantastic!

For nerve pain, we have ‘nervigesic’. Its a combination of herbs that have been used for thousands of years in traditional Chinese medicine.

Another great one is ‘saligesic.’ It comes from willow bark; that’s what aspirin was made after. So if you want the natural version of it that still has all the synergistic compounds, that’s your way to go! It also works really well for women who have cramps.

And also, Tumeric is a herb that makes you heal faster in combination with a good diet.

To wrap it up: We always have an influence on people who are in pain. You always have the ability to help someone move their journey, to help them become more pain tolerable, simply by saying the words: You got this! You are a healing machine—the moment you say that, you move them into more pain tolerance.

What is one action that we can take today after this episode to move us toward becoming superhuman?

Get our brain to the mindset to always ask the simple question: What is my body asking me for? Because your body will never lie to you.
