We couldn’t have selected a better guest to launch the new year.

What is the biggest obstacle as we try to move forward?

The biggest obstacle we face will be PTSD after 2020. 2020 elicited emotional trauma that has scared and altered us in many ways. The state of uncertainty has frazzled us at a deep level and it is beyond what a lot of people are used to. Experiences can create powerful emotions, and this past year had a deep emotional impact. Every time we remember 2020, we may trigger those emotions.

What does it really mean to become emotionally fit?

This refers to someone who can deal with high-pressure emotional events and not let their emotions overrun them. Have you ever woken up in a shitty mood? Or got a nasty email from someone? Did somebody say something that triggered you or set you off? That’s when emotional fitness comes in! Stop and ask yourself if what you are thinking about is going to get you to where you want to go? Emotional fitness is dealing with our emotions instead of our emotions dealing with us. Emotional fitness could almost be synonymous with mindfulness and presence. By controlling how events and experiences influence us, we develop further emotional fitness. We can always choose how we react and respond to something that is happening externally to us.

Anxiety

We humans do not like uncertainty. An anxiety attack is not only a mental experience, but a physical experience. The entire body is engaged and your physiological chemistry is altered during an anxiety attack. Endorphins are released, there are biochemical changes, and there is a physiological shift. One of the best practices for anxiety is breathing. Breathing also creates a physiological shift in the body! Breathing in and out through the nose releases hormones and stimulates the pineal gland which helps the body calm down. Breathing feeds the cell oxygen because it brings the body and mind inside, and it blocks everything on the outside.

Is there a time and place that we actually need to feel pain? Can we use this pain for fuel?

Yes, pain is one of nature’s greatest teachers. I am talking about physical pain, emotional pain, and mental pain. We tend to anesthetize the pain to make it go away. However, if we don’t listen to our pain, it will only get worse. Sometimes, our biggest challenge when overcoming our pain is to just get started. When you start to do something, commit to it. Let’s say you do not feel great, so you do not think you will have a good workout, and you skip going to the gym. This can cause a snowball effect and derail your daily motivation to go to the gym. Instead, be the person that shows up even if they feel bad, does one sit up, and goes home. This way you are able to keep your momentum going. Stop finding excuses not to do what you say you are going to do.

How important is someone’s environment and tribe that surrounds them?

The people we are around have a massive influence on us and our decisions. The environments that we put ourselves in are equally as influential. We have to take ownership of where we are at, and if we don’t think we are living up to our potential, change our environment and tribe.
