Simple VS Easy | Episode 135
The Simplicity of Health
Human beings are living longer today than they ever had in history.
That must mean that we are also the healthiest we’ve ever been, right?
Not quite.
While the average age of the population has been increasing, our health has been on the opposite trajectory.
This week on the Health Made Simple show, we discuss the difference between lifespan and healthspan, and how to make the most of the bodies we have.
It’s not about “aging” – it’s about what we are doing with our age.
Where to start?
With the New Year upon us, there’s never been a better time to reasses your goals. How did your body feel this past year? What improvements can you make this year?
When it comes to your health, you should always be aiming to have your healthiest year yet. Every new day brings a new opportunity to get stronger, fuel our bodies more efficiently, and improve our mental state.

How To Be “Healthy”
To live a healthy life, it simply comes down 4 core elements
- Eating well
- Moving often
- Thinking well
- Sleeping well
But if health is this simple, why do so many people struggle?
Don’t make the mistake of assuming that simple also means easy. Thanks to technology and medical advancements the North American mindset is conditioned to gravitate towards the easiest route available.
Not only that but the current medical system is not designed to help those with a chronically unhealthy bodies. It is designed to address acute illness only. Because of this, it is difficult to heal the general population of common illnesses such as diabetes or cardiovascular disease.
Health should be prioritized because it provides us with a sense of purpose. If we are living life to the absolute best of our abilities, that is something to be proud of. The disease is the result of negative circumstances that the body didn’t like. Therefore, it is very possible to heal the body by cultivating a positive environment to do so.
You Can Start TODAY!
You can start making positive changes at any time, so why not start now?
An easy change you can start implementing today is exercise. If you are currently not exercising whatsoever, start with some basic walking and yoga. If you already exercise on a regular basis, take stock of what you’re doing. Are you challenging yourself, or are you sticking to what you are already good at? No matter where you are at in your physical journey, challenge yourself to stay away from “easy.”
Ensure that you are fueling the body correctly. Eating well comes down to one main principle: only consuming whole foods. With so many tempting processed, sugary, and fried foods to get us off track, it’s important to keep our habits in check. We become emotionally attached to the unhealthy foods we eat, and use them as a crutch for parts of ourselves that needs healing.
Don’t forget to listen to your body. It will never lie to you, so to become a better listener, make the effort to keep your body clean. Alcohol, toxins, and other unwanted substances silence our ability to listen to our bodies. We are led to believe that listening to our bodies (eating well, exercising, etc), is difficult, but that doesn’t have to be the case. We have accepted softness as a society, which has been deadly for our health.
Ensure that you are budgeting the time to give your body enough sleep. Sleep is our body’s time to heal the body and eliminate disease, so when we don’t get enough sleep we are robbing our bodies of having
Lifespan vs. Healthspan
Lifespan = how many years you are alive
Healthspan = how many years you are without the disease.
We have more people alive yet unhealthy today than ever before.
How can you maximize the number of healthy years in your life?
Your healthspan is where your goals and aspirations live. Share your goals with people in your life. Hold yourself accountable to maximizing your health span as much as possible. Don’t just wing it – create a strategy to ensure you succeed in your goals.
Everyone is different, but as a general rule, not having a strategy will be your biggest roadblock for success. Give yourself the credit that you deserve. You can do things that are hard. Ask for help, hire a coach, share your journey, and enjoy the ride to get the most out of your healthspan.
While the road to a long healthspan may not always be easy, it will always be simple. Commit to rejuvenating your body this New Year, and it will reward you with a long and healthy life.
