Health is simple at its core – even in the summertime. 

Even though nights on the patio, parties, and fun in the sun often feel like they are competing against our health habits – I’m here to help make it easy. 

On this week’s episode of the Health Made Simple Show, we’re breaking down the top 3 things you need to pay attention to this summer to prevent road blocking your healing journey. 

We’re diving into the three key areas that are most affected by summer fun (and have the largest impact on your health).

As always, I kick off the show with my best clinical insights from the week to set the stage. Recently, a young lady came in for 4th acupuncture session. She is still showing some hesitancy towards the treatments. Tune in to hear what was REALLY causing her pain.

Skin:

As the largest eliminating organ you have, your skin is built to absorb. So what do you think is happening when you are using sunscreen and other chemical-based products? Your body goes into detox mode, increasing your lymphatic activity, moving energy away from other critical processes, etc. 

While you may have been raised to believe the sun was harmful and sunscreen protects your skin. And while too much sun exposure CAN be harmful in larger doses over time, forcing your body into detox mode unnecessarily. 

Not only that, but Vitamin D deficiencies (which you NEED sun exposure to prevent) is a precursor for a multitude of health problems like bone, hormone, and sleep problems. 

Vitamin C and calcium lactate are also essential nutrients to protect your skin this summer. Sugar blocks these receptors as well so sugary alcoholic drinks and sweets will negatively impact your skin’s ability to protect itself. 

If you know you are going to spend a lot of time outside, bring your supplementary nutrients along and top up periodically throughout the day.

Liver:

Everything your body is exposed to makes it to the liver. Not only that, but its performance directly impacts almost every process in your body. Many common diagnoses like cholesterol problems or gut issues can be traced back to liver function. 

The inconvenient reality is that the second you fray from God’s Garden diet (i.e ZERO processed foods), you are putting your liver at risk. Milk thistle is one of the best herbs to support liver function. Just 1-2 tablets per day can make a world of difference. 

Weight:

Anytime you put processed food into your body, it confuses your immune system into storing it as fat cells. During a summer filled with processed carbs and other sugar (including alcohol), your body will have an impossible time losing weight.

Following a diet as low in carbs as possible (as difficult as it may be) is the only sure-fire way to see the weight loss results you’re looking for. Exchange sugar for protein, and you will feel like a superhuman in no time.
