Vitamin D, Rest, And more! | Episode 78
One of the hardest things to do when it comes to your health is play catch-up. When you know you have a nagging health issue and you keep pushing it further and further down the road, eventually you have to pay. A majority of things doctors end up treating were preventable. Often, by masking symptoms with painkillers or other drugs, you’re creating more problems for yourself. If you’re not feeling the pain, odds are, you’re making it worse.

The proactive strategy is the superhuman strategy.
Now, let’s get to this week’s questions.
1. As part of leveling up, do you recommend eliminating protein powder from foods?
Protein powders shouldn’t be a replacement for animal proteins, but rather used as a supplement. The gold standard is asking ourselves, “Does it come from God’s Garden?”. However, you don’t necessarily have to eliminate them, as long as they’re whole foods and being used as a supplement.
2. My 24 year old friend has struggled with insomnia since high school. Prescription medicine hasn’t helped her, what would you suggest for someone who can’t turn their thoughts off?
If your body is stuck in sympathetic dominance, you’ll have a tough time falling asleep. It’s always better to address the root causes of poor sleep than just the symptom. I recommend Min-Tran and Ashwagandha Complex along with Kava, which you can get by contacting Balance Health Studio at 850.231.9288 and info@balance30a.com. Rely heavily on the vitamins and herbs, because if you’re already in your head, a long list of bedtime tasks won’t help. Just make sure your sleep environment is cold, dark and quiet.
(As a sidenote, I don’t recommend melatonin. It’s a hormone and I usually try to stay away from any hormone replacement therapies)
3. How quickly do Vitamin D levels drop in the fall and winter?
Inevitably, as we get less sun, our bodies will produce less Vitamin D. Within 24 hours, you can notice a difference. You can be checking your levels every 60 days to see if what you’re doing to add Vitamin D to your life is working. I have yet to see a SINGLE test this year where someone was taking too much. You can just contact the office for a test at 850.231.9288 and info@balance30a.com.
4. How do you send love to someone going through a tough time without making it seem like you feel sorry for them?
We get our strength and support from other people. Our tribe drives us up or down and how we use our words with one another is important. There’s no one perfect way to do it. Always come from the heart and always ask yourself, “Did I leave them in a higher place than when I found them?”.
5. Which nutrients are lost with beta blockers and water pills?
Electrolytes, especially sodium, is the first one I think of with the water pills. With the beta blockers, I think of the CoQ10 and Vitamin B.
6. How do you navigate a fad diet world?
I don’t necessarily have a problem with “fad diets”, especially things like keto, carnivore and others that I think are here to stay. The best things you can do are to get back to basics and get back to God’s Garden. In the garden, there are plants and animals. The most important part is finding what’s best for you. And, if you don’t know what to do, just take out sugar and processed foods! There’s no diet, fad or not, that would tell you to eat those things.
7. How do you know the difference between whole food supplements and synthetic supplements?
When you go to the grocery store and see rows and rows of supplements, most are synthetic, which means they’re made from chemicals. They’re NOT in the whole food philosophy we talk about. The first thing you can do is pick up the bottle and look at the ingredients. For example, the best sources of B Vitamins are livers, so you might see some livers listed. If you see chemical names, often, that’s a chemical compound. When you take a synthetic that only uses isolates, it has to take from your body. You can also look for the word “AS”. If it says a chemical acting “AS” the vitamin, it’s typically a synthetic made in a lab.
8. Any thoughts on Moringa?
It’s a good herb! We use it to add to smoothies or things like that in the cafe!
9. Are you a fan of turkey burgers?
Yes, the fatter the better and without the bun.
And last, but certainly not least, this week’s one action to become superhuman is…
Be Proactive.
Get your rest, take care of yourself, go to that yoga class, be intentional. It’s not always sexy, but it will pay off when we peak on January 1st!
